Roland "Dean" Leenhouts, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2024, in Yakima, Washington. Born on August 22, 1934, in Yakima, Dean lived a life rich with love, adventure, and dedication. Dean grew up in East Selah, Washington, and remained a beloved member of the community throughout his 90 years. He was a devoted husband to his late wife, Wanda Leenhouts, with whom he shared a profound and loving bond. Dean is survived by his two sons from his first marriage to Carol Ludwig: Daniel Leenhouts and his wife Shelly of Des Moines, WA, and David Leenhouts of Pacific, WA. He is also survived by his step-sons from his marriage to Wanda: Robert Yule and his wife Colleen of Kennewick, WA, and Barry Yule of Selah, WA. Dean's legacy includes his grandchildren Amanda Leenhouts of Covington, WA, and Lauren Yazdidoost (Yule) and her husband Shervin of Newcastle, WA, as well as his great-granddaughter Leila Yazdidoost. He also leaves behind his recent loving partner, Judy Graham of Selah, WA. Dean was predeceased by his wife Wanda, his parents Elsie and Roland Leenhouts, his grandson Devin Leenhouts, and many beloved dogs who brought joy to his life. Dean attended Washington State University, where he obtained a Master's degree in Education and was a proud, lifelong Coug. A distinguished woodshop teacher with over 30 years of service to the Naches and Yakima Valley school districts, Dean was known for his exceptional craftsmanship and dedication to his students. His passion for woodworking was evident in the many beautiful pieces of furniture and houses he crafted with precision and care. His influence as a teacher left a lasting impact on countless students. An avid outdoorsman, Dean's hobbies included horseback riding, salmon and deep-sea fishing, crabbing, hunting, hiking, and exploring nature. His adventurous spirit led him and Wanda across North America and Europe, with memorable travels including explorations of the Aztec ruins in Mexico, summers fishing in Port Alberni, Canada, winters in Sedona, Arizona, and sunny Florida, and river cruises throughout Europe. Remarkably, he enjoyed a cruise and a two-week trip to Alaska with Judy at the age of 88. Dean's zest for life, humor, and kindness made him a beloved figure among his family and friends. His straightforwardness and refreshing honesty were matched by his deep compassion and willingness to help others. His large heart and engaging personality drew people to him, leaving a legacy of love and friendship. Dean will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A funeral service celebrating his extraordinary life will be held at 12:00pm on Saturday, September 21st at Shaw & Sons Funeral Home in Yakima. Reception to follow at same location.
