Avery Lynn Garner Obituary
In Loving Memory
Sadly, early on the morning of June 11, 2022, our family lost one of our precious and loved angels. Avery Lynn Garner, daughter of Adrianne Garner and Michael Garner, passed away in a tragic automobile accident. She was born in Pueblo, Colorado on August 5, 1997. Along with her parents and twin sister Jasmine, the family relocated to Yakima in 1999, where Avery attended primary, middle and high school in the Yakima School District. She graduated from A.C. Davis High School in 2015. She was very active throughout her high school years, participating in basketball and other extracurricular activities including being a member and officerof the Black Student Union. In her beloved community civic activities, she was a member of the Yakima County NAACP Youth Council, where she served in many leadership capacities, including several terms as president, treasurer and other positions. She was a member of the Mount Hope Baptist Church where she served as a member of the Sunday School and as a youth usher.
Gaining a love and skill of cooking from her father, Avery became an expert in the kitchen during her teen and adult years. She would often be found preparing "soul food" dinners and desserts for family and friends. She was particularly skilled at preparing delicious Prime Rib Holiday dinners for her family and was in high demand among family and friends for her banana pudding and beautiful coconut cakes. She most recently was employed as a sous chef at Warehouse West Restaurant in Yakima.Avery was also excellent at braiding hair, styling customers on a regular basis.
Even though Avery's was a short life, she learned many lessons early, one of which was the importance of giving back. At a very early age, she inherited and embodied her love of community service and volunteerism from her grandmother, Ester Huey. She began volunteering at the Henry Beauchamp Community Center (formerly Southeast Yakima Community Center)around the age of 10 and continued throughout her life. From supervising at-risk children and youth, cooking and serving meals to senior citizens, and just about anywhere else she saw a need, Avery was fully committed to making the Southeast Yakima Community a better place. Avery was also a long-time volunteer for Rotary Operation Harvest. Her legacy of service includes (along with her sisters, Jasmine and Daeshjia) 15 years of delivering special poinsettia plants to the doors of senior Southeast African American Women every Christmas, a legacy her sisters will continue on in her memory. Avery and her twin also had a tradition of gathering all of their young cousins together each Christmas holiday season to bake Christmas cookies for their parents and friends.Again, a legacy that her twin will carry on. Avery had a great love for her elderly family members and sat by the bedside of several close family relatives in their last days, including her beloved great grandmother from whom she gained great wisdom. This care and compassion carried inside and outside her family. Avery would give the shirt off her back if someone needed it. She will be remembered for her kind heart, generous nature, love for her family and friends, and of course her love of the Golden State Warriors and Green Bay Packers. She will be deeply missed, but her legacies will live on.
Avery is survived by her parents, Michael and Adrianne of Yakima, one brother, Michael Garner (Kylie) of Yakima, three sisters, India Garner (Adrianna) of Las Vegas, Nevada, her identical twin Jasmine Garner (Richard), with whom Avery shared a special bond, and Daeshjia Watley both of Yakima, two grandmothers,Elizabeth Townsend and EsterHueyof Yakima, nephew/godson, Tyson and nephew Kairo, of Yakima, godson, Joshua Atkins, two nieces, Mar-Kyahand Riley Jane of Yakima, two aunts, Lynetta Saucier (Paul) and Felicia Atkins (Gary) of Yakima, three uncles, Brian Watley of Seattle, Andre Green and Pablo Huey of Yakima, special cousin James Gratton (Margaret) of Seattle, two very special childhood friends, ChristianRanceand RickyBlakelyof Yakima, and numerous more aunts, uncles, cousins, other nieces and nephews, and close friends and family, including her lifelong Pastor and Mentor, Rev.
