With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father, husband, grandfather, and friend, Duarte Medina Fernandes, on December 21, 2024, surrounded by the unwavering love and warmth of his family. He was born on October 17, 1937, in Graciosa, Azores. He was the devoted husband of Josefina Fernandes, with whom he shared a lifetime of joy and partnership. Duarte was a proud father to four wonderful children, Duarte A., Rui, Teresa (spouse Donavan Skaggs), and Nuno (spouse Valerie Ando). His love extended deeply to his six cherished grandchildren, Helen Fernandes, Christopher Fernandes, Quelminda Fernandes, Rachael Skaggs, Gabriela Fernandes, and Rodger Skaggs, who were truly the light of his life. He is also survived by his siblings, Mario, Leoberto, Celestino, and Valdemira, who were dear to his heart. Duarte worked as the head maintenance engineer at Davis High School, in the Yakima School District, during the 1980s and 1990s. He was well-loved by students and staff alike, often sharing jokes and warm conversations that made the hallways feel alive with his presence. His kindness and humor left an enduring mark on the school community. Although Duarte took a courageous leap in moving his family across the globe, first to Angola in 1969 and then settling in Yakima in 1976, his heart never truly left Graciosa. He carried a profound love for his island home, keeping its traditions and values alive by sharing them with family and friends. Duarte's legacy of love, humor, and unwavering dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His memory will remain a beacon of strength, warmth, and kindness for those whose lives he touched. A Viewing will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2024, at 9:00am, at Shaw & Sons Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow, at 11:00am, at St. Paul Cathedral. A Graveside Service will be held at West Hills Memorial Park.
