Gregory Harvey

–

Yakima, Washington

Greg Harvey left our presence on Sunday, November 29. He died in his home with his wife Wendy and dear friend Jenna by his side. Greg was born in Yakima to James and Alma Patricia Harvey on December 22, 1953. He attended Summitview Elementary and West Valley High School, graduating in 1972.
He briefly attended Eastern Washington University before enlisting in the US Air Force in 1974 to begin training as an Air Traffic Controller. He was honorably discharged in 1978 and immediately began working for the FAA until 1981 and continued working as a controller with the US Air Force Reserves through 1986.
Greg joined the Yakima County Sheriff's office in 1985 as a Communications Clerk and later as Deputy Sheriff. He worked at Bob Hall Chevrolet from 1997-2007 when he went to work for Lee Peterson Motors. The physical effects of ALS forced him to leave work in July of this year.
Greg was absolutely brave and gracious in face of his anticipated physical deterioration. He made one last "guys trip" to New Orleans, September 9-13 where he was introduced to using a wheelchair and relying on others for his mobility. His friends Bob, Doug, Mike and Craig shared the responsibilities. The last 2 1/2 months of Greg's life were spent surrounded by people who loved him. When he was no longer physically able to go out for a drink with friends, they brought the bar to him. There were many evenings of fun and laughter in the garage. As more learned of Greg's illness, old friends stopped by to love and support him as well. Each of the visits touched his heart.
Greg is survived by his wife Wendy, son Sam, granddaughter Jordynne, and his sister's children Mike, Carrie and Brent Colby and their families. He was preceded in death by his sister Carol in 1987 and both of his parents in 2014.
A memorial service is planned for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 12, 2015 at Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Yakima.
Our hearts are broken to lose this wonderful man. Going forward, we are encouraged by Greg's wish that we be a friend to everyone we meet.
If desired, you may make a contribution to the Sunrise Outreach Center in care of Vineyard Christian Fellowship, 221 E. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. to support the services provided to the homeless and less fortunate.
