Harriet Ide

–

Yakima, Washington

Harriet Ide passed away at Cottage in the Meadow on December 7th at the age of 87. She was born on May 6, 1932 on a farm in Harrah. Her parents, John and Cora Kooy, came from Holland. They named her Hendrieka Jocina. She liked the American name of Harriet.

In her youth, she was a member of the White Swan Pep Club and the Mountain View Sunday School. After graduation, she attended Yakima Business College.

Harriet then married Don Ide on August 23, 1952 in the First Presbyterian Church of Yakima. Thus began the lifelong partnership of volunteer work in the church.

Harriet took an active role in raising her two children, Donna and Donnie. She enjoyed being a homemaker. At this time she served as P.T.A. President of Broadway School from 1963-65 and became one of the first teacher assistants in the Yakima School District.

Over the years Harriet was busy with community volunteer work in Blue Birds, Camp Fire Girls, Rainbow Girls, Boy Scouts, Club Scouts, the Cancer Dive and the Heart Fund.

She then began working at the Yakima County Courthouse in the Auditors Office as a clerk/secretary and the Election Board.

Among her many duties at church, Harriet taught Sunday school and was elected the Womens Club Moderator. She was awarded an Honorary Lifetime Membership in the Presbyterian Womens Association. She helped on the Hospitality Committee and the nursing home ministry.

In her retirement, Harriet enjoyed outdoor activities such as gardening, walking and riding her bike. She worked part-time as a store demo person and in a gift shop.

She was proud of her Dutch heritage and her large family of Dekkers and Van de Graafs. She was also proud that she had celebrated her 59th wedding anniversary.

Harriet is survived by son Donnie, daughter Donna, grandson Tony, sister Lyzene Isaacs and brother Leonard Kooy.
