Some people leave behind memories. Others leave behind a legacy that lives on in every family gathering, every shared laugh, and every story told around the kitchen table. Sylvia Izzittie Hatley, lovingly known as “Sibby,” was one of those extraordinary people.
On October 14, 2026, Sibby passed away peacefully at home at the age of 91, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories, a family who adored her, and a spirit that will continue to shine through generations.
Born on November 3, 1934, at Toppenish Hospital to John Sanders and Izeta Thompson, Sibby was a lifelong resident of the Yakima Valley. She spent her early years in Union Gap and attended school in Yakima.
In 1954, she married the love of her life, Luke Hatley, beginning a partnership that would last 65 wonderful years until his passing in February 2020. Together they raised three children—James “Jim” Hatley, Luke “Slick” Hatley, and Teresa Hatley—and spent many years working side by side as the owners and operators of Big Toe Truck and Auto. They worked hard, but also knew how to enjoy life, especially during their frequent trips to Reno, Nevada.
Above all else, Sibby was the heartbeat of her family. Her home was more than a house; it was a gathering place where generations came together, stories were shared, and laughter filled the rooms. Her doors were never locked, a pitcher of sweet tea was usually ready, and there was always room for one more person at her kitchen table.
Sibby showed her love in countless ways, but especially through the meals she prepared. She delighted in cooking for whoever happened to stop by. Her hearty breakfasts for Luke and the grandkids became treasured family memories, and her legendary pancakes and famous fried potatoes will never be forgotten. No matter how many recipes are passed down, nothing will taste quite like breakfast at Sibby’s house.
When the cooking was done, you might find her relaxing with a glass of sweet tea and watching Judge Judy, The People’s Court, or Unsolved Mysteries. She loved a good night of bingo at St. Joe’s or Super D with her sister Wanda and dear friend Cathy. She was also a devoted Seattle Mariners fan, always ready to cheer on her team.
Sibby was fiercely independent, strong-willed, and blessed with a sharp wit. She spoke her mind without hesitation, and you always knew where you stood with her. Her family will smile for ears to come remembering one of her favorite lines: “You can kiss where the sun don’t shine, and I don’t mean the back of my neck!” It was pure Sibby—bold, funny, unforgettable, and entirely herself.
Beneath that spirited exterior was a woman whose love for her family ran deep. She created a place of belonging, where people could show up just as they were and know they had a seat at the table. Her legacy is found not only in the family she raised, but in the warmth, resilience, laughter, and traditions she passed along.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Luke Hatley; her sons, James “Jim” Hatley and Luke “Slick” Hatley; her granddaughter, Stacy Fox; her great-grandson, Jeffrey James Cozzetto II; her parents; and many of her brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her sister, Gloria; her devoted daughter, Teresa Hatley; her grandchildren, Shane Hatley (Katie), James Hatley (Nicole), Brandy Hatley, Jeffrey Cozzetto, and Lacey Hatley (Angel); and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who will carry her memory forward.
Sibby’s life was not defined by grand gestures, but by the extraordinary love she gave in everyday moments: a hot breakfast, a full glass of sweet tea, an open door, a spirited opinion, and a kitchen table that always brought everyone together. She will be deeply missed, joyfully remembered, and forever loved.
