Encourager, Honored in Legacy

John's Life remembered
John was a cherished and beloved part of our funeral home family, faithfully serving as a licensed Crematory Operator, trusted colleague, and one of our greatest team cheerleaders.
Though John did many things behind the scenes, he thrived with the interactions that he had with the staff at the Health Department, hospitals, Coroner’s offices, law enforcement, as well as the families who called on our staff for care. He was well known as an encourager, with an ever present smile and hug.
His influence was profound. John shared an extraordinary close bond with his son, Jamin John. Jamin often reflects that the values that guide his leadership today - how to care for people well, how to genuinely and generously engage with the community, and how to work hard with integrity – were simply learned by watching his dad live those values every day. John did not lecture or demand; he modeled a life of service worth following.
John was a loving husband, devoted father and affectionate “Grandpa Johnny”. Faith and family were central to him. No matter the season of life, John carried a steady optimism and a sincere belief that the glass was always at least half full. Even in the most difficult of times, including his 3 year battle with Glioblastoma, he found countless reasons to remain thankful, positive and hopeful. John met each moment with grace, strength, and an unwavering trust in God.
John possessed a rare and beautiful gift: the ability to love people exactly where they were. He welcomed individuals from all walks of life, regardless of their struggles or how messy life had become. His acceptance was genuine, his grace unearned, and his care unconditional. His way of loving others has been passed down to his children and grandchildren and continues to shape how they live and serve today.
The depth of John’s impact was unmistakable at his funeral, where more than 650 people gathered at the Yakima Convention Center to honor his life. Even in his own funeral, in a way that perfectly reflected who he was, John had pre-recorded videos, encouraging others—urging them to hold their heads high, be encouragers, and make a difference in the world. John’s strong faith in Jesus shaped everything about him. It kept him grounded and humble, never allowing him to become prideful or arrogant despite the respect and admiration he earned. He viewed himself simply as a servant—grateful for the opportunity to love others and thankful for whatever good might come from his life.
He was deeply loved by his community and respected throughout the funeral profession, leaving a lasting impact on our staff, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He leaves behind his wife Barb, of 49 years, his daughter Amy Mohler, and his son, Jamin (wife Kara) and their children.
Attached is the video message of his encouragement to and appreciation of the staff that serves from our funeral homes.
The attached music was created by Henry Johnston (with the assistance of AI), of Johnston and Williams Funeral Home, who though serving the same community as Brookside, and from a different funeral home, held a deep respect and appreciation for John and his family.
We value his legacy and make it our mission to live it out in our lives as well.
